The big picture

If you’re like many of us, caring to make a difference and puzzled by the disjointedness of the efforts to build pathways to  a better future, then rest assured, you’re not alone

There are vast numbers of women, men and youth, all over the world, engaged in movements for reinventing organizations, saving the climate, regenerating bioregions and agriculture, healing the sick healthcare system, making economies work for all, bringing education into the twenty-first century, giving a humane direction to AI, and countless other drives for turning noble collective aspirations into reality.

Then why are we still at the brink of existential risks, caught in the culture wars and rampant inequalities? Why must nearly half of the planet’s population still live below the poverty level and most of the rest be obliged to do meaningless, alienating work in soulless workplaces?

How can we grow capabilities to trigger bigger changes together than any one of us could alone, without dogmas or someone telling the others what to do? We don’t have answers but on this collaborative learning expedition we will co-discover some.

Individual learning & action outcomes

  • Understand the importance of social ecosystems as domains of societal transformation
  • Learn to successfully apply ecosystemic frameworks in your current and future projects
  • Understand your role as ecosystem catalyst or “enlivener,” map your capacities to energize it
  • Develop an enriched vision and action plan for your project, empowered by the collective intelligence of an impact group

Collective learning and action outcomes

For whom

We believe that facing the tremendous complexity of a much needed societal shift, people who want to influence a societal shift by working with social ecosystems need to engage in mutual learning, given the interdependence of the issues that we have to address.

There’s an emerging new breed of change champions, who are focusing on connecting the dots, mapping the landscapes of transformations, and creating opportunities for learning from each other’s insights and practices worth replicating.

We are in touch with some of those change champions, who asked for our support to facilitate the formation and accompany the development of peer-learning impact groups of ecosystem catalysts.

This learning journey is for practitioners  – entrepreneurs, activists, educators,  researchers, consultants, facilitators, and all those, who seek to empower the ecosystem of transformative projects in any social sector.

The Societal Shift is part of the Protopia series of learning journeys, the previous segments of which covered Personal, Interpersonal, and Organizational Shift. As  extra benefits, participants who join the  current segment will have access to selected materials of the previous three.

Participants will also include graduates of the Organizational Shift segment of our Protopia learning journey, who  are aware that no profound transformation in organizations can be sustainable without a shift  in the industry or other social ecosystems in which they are embedded.

Instead of a curriculum

There will be no pre-set curriculum, but an intensive and collaborative deep dive into discovering and exercising the new capabilities that change catalysts need to develop to meet their challenges.

At the Orientation session we’ll revisit a few key distinctions, just to develop a shared language necessary to facilitate our collaboration, e.g.:

  • Social institutions and sectors as social ecosystems
  • “Transcontextual mutual learning” (Nora Bateson) for discovering synergies in and across social ecosystems
  • “Impact groups” (John Hagel)

In the weekly sessions following the Orientation, we may also address such questions as listed below for example, and anything that the impact groups need to advance their action and learning.

  • How to map your personal and group learning ecosystem for greater connectivity and breakthrough discoveries?
  • How do the yin and the yang of ecosystem-enabling regenerative platforms dance together?
  • What are good examples of generative and ecosystemic leadership?
  • How is lifelong learning in learning ecosystems?
  • Why is vertical literacy pivotal for catalyzing societal shifts?
  • What does it take to cultivate Self-Organizing Collective Intelligence?
  • What does ecosystem convening in complex landscapes look like?
  • Who are the ecosystem “thrivalists” and what do they do?
  • How to learn working with the three types of complexity?

What is a developmental venture?

When you feel motivated to collaborate on upgrading the social ecosystem that you are part of and you know that you don’t have all the capabilities required by that, then you need to develop them.

A “venture” is a daring undertaking and that’s what we invite you to join. It’s daring because we’re moving into uncharted territories and the stakes are high. It will not be a course that prepares you to do something meaningful only after completing it; your capability  development will be embedded  in your impact group, where you’ll jointly “commit to acting, achieving impact and learning through action.” (John Hagel)

What will be provided

  •  6 weekly, community-wide meetings
  • Platform and collaboration guidelines for asynchronous collaboration with your group and the rest of the learning community
  • You will also have opportunity to receive personal and group coaching with one of the Learning Guides
  • The learning journey will be supported by dedicated coaches and a Cybrary comprised of knowledge resources, as well as, working documents and summaries developed by the groups.

(That highly personalized service will take the drudgery out of your having to hunt for case studies, experiences, and reports relevant to your mission, scattered around the global web. This service will be provided by Future HOW, the research center affiliated with Campus Co-Evolve.

One more thing. Graduates of the Societal Shift learning journey may choose to form an ongoing and fully self-organized community of practice in ecosystem enlivening. They will also be eligible to enter the subsequent, Planetary Shift learning journey.
