What is included and time requirements
This learning journey is divided into 5 segments. Each segment can be taken unbundled or together, as a full learning journey.
In each segment, you will participate in one or two live, real-time teaching sessions and one reversed classroom (see our FAQ), where you will jointly share the findings of your discovery teams with the whole cohort, via Zoom video conference.
In each segment, you will also have opportunity for personal consultations with the instructor and asynchronous collaboration with your discovery team and the rest of the cohort.
The cohort’s journey will also be supported by a Protopia Knowledge Garden, a dynamic repository of written and audio-visual materials organized in “garden patches” that correspond to the focus of our segments.
According to our alumni, the successful completion of our learning journeys requires, on average, 8 hrs/week dedicated to your study, including one class per week of 120 minutes, and then self-study or group/team work.
Note that what follows is a tentative program of the learning journey, subject to refinement by the input from interested parties. The actual mix of content elements in each segment will change to respond more directly to the emergent issues of the participants.
Segment Outlines

- Doing what you do playfully, “allowing every element of the play to transform you, taking pleasure in every surprise” (Finite and Infinite Games)
29 April, 6, 13, 20 May
The focus of this phase is interpersonal development. You are welcomed to join this course as partners with another person – or you can ask this person to dedicate some time for interpersonal practice as you go through the course.

Segment 4: Work with social ecosystems

In this segment, you will grow your influence on change in a social area of your choice. It may include (but is not limited to): reinventing organizations, saving the climate, regenerating bioregions and agriculture, healing the sick healthcare system, making economies work for all, bringing education into the twenty-first century, giving a humane direction to technology, etc.
Segment 5: Chart the pathways and conditions to humanity’s Phase Shift
TBC
In this final segment of the Protopia journey we will discover and experience our individual and collective response-ability to our Emerging Planetary Reality.
Areas we may cover in this segment include:
- Commons Transition
- Game B
- Global Activation of Intention and Action (GAIA)
Learning Outcomes:
- Learn navigating the emergent theories and practices of humanity’s Phase Shift
- Collaborate on Action Research for Transformation (ART) to chart the potential contribution of your ecosystem to the Phase Shift
Path forward: the Protopia Lab
The learning journey of our community doesn’t end when the course ends. This week-long Protopia Lab will take place, if COVID conditions permit, in a beautiful location in Russia, where we will explore our mutually supportive relationship with nature as humanity’s ally.
Regardless, whether in nature or online, this gathering will be a profound experience of deepening your friendships and galvanizing your positive influence on your world, by participating in the formation of self-organizing teams for Action Research for Transformation (ART). It will also let the Protopian community chart its course of collaborative learning for the months (and years) ahead.
